Dr. Melanie Penny Harrison

Dr. Melanie Penny-Harrison is a scholar, author, filmmaker, actress, cultural critic, and creative artist whose work explores the complex intersections of Black womanhood, beauty, identity, race, gender, representation, and personal transformation. Her academic research has examined the portrayal of Black women in American film and the complicated relationship between increased visibility and genuine progress in media representation. Through her scholarship and creative work, Dr. Harrison challenges audiences to look beyond surface-level ideas of inclusion and examine the cultural messages that shape how Black women are seen—and how they learn to see themselves. Her work is also deeply personal. Having navigated worlds ranging from academia and filmmaking to acting, modeling, performance, and entertainment, Dr. Harrison brings a rare perspective to conversations about identity, contradiction, judgment, self-expression, and the freedom to become more than one version of yourself. She is the author of Ugly Philosophy: Beauty, Absurdity & the Black Feminine Paradox, a provocative exploration of beauty, stigma, embodiment, race, gender, and the expectations placed upon Black women.
